Starting with an overnight stay at a hotel in Santiago de Chile, you will meet your expedition ship in Punta Arenas. The journey south begins among steep mountains, green valleys flourishing with life, and glaciers in the Chilean fjords before we sail through the extremely narrow Canal Gabriel and into the Garibaldi Fjord. Here we take our small boats out for a closer look at the two glaciers at the end of the fjord and the wildlife here.
If the weather is favorable we will land on Cape Horn on Christmas Eve. On board, we celebrate Christmas the 'Norwegian way', with a Christmas tree, carols, and a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner. As we sail in the open sea you will start seeing Antarctic penguins and icebergs in the water, and maybe even whales as well, as we are sailing into the most remote area of the world.
In Antarctica, you can join our Expedition Team on landings that include visits to the most interesting places, looking at thousands of penguins and seals, and kayaking.
Heading north, we will spend several days at the Falkland Islands experiencing everything from red buses and English pubs in the capital of Stanley to white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, old shipwrecks, and the bird paradise of Carcass Island. Here we use our small boats go ashore for exploring, hiking, or takinga closer look at birds such as several species of duck, geese, penguins, albatross, caracaras, and wrens.
After completing the loop of the Magellan Strait we disembark in Punta Arenas.

This is an expedition where the elements rule, and the weather, wind and ice conditions will determine our schedule. Safety is paramount and the captain will decide the final sailing itinerary during the voyage. Hence, this itinerary is just an indication of what you can experience and why every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique.

Day 1: Taste of Santiago

Location : Santiago de Chile, Chile

Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th century Neoclassical architecture, and winding side streets dotted with buildings of Art Deco, Neo-Gothic, and other architectural styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, and lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The mountains of the Andes can be seen from most points in the city.

Day 6 and 7: Where Two Oceans Meet

Location : Drake Passage

We spend a couple of days cruising Drake Passage, which connects the southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Here the warm water from the north meets the cold, less salty water from the south. This makes the ocean particularly rich in nutrients and is home to unique marine life. From the deck you will soon see Antarctic penguins, icebergs, and maybe even whales. While we cross the sea toward Antarctica, a number of presentations will be given on board about various aspects of the history and wildlife of the Antarctic. You will also be given a thorough introduction to the current guidelines for visiting this vulnerable environment.

Day 14: Little England

Location : Falkland Islands

You are now in one of the most remote areas of the world! Go ashore to explore the impressive Antarctic scenery, penguins, and fur seals. From deck there are lots of chances of seeing whales as well. Enjoy close encounters with wildlife and glacier and discover old whaling stations and their relics. While in Antarctica, we will attempt to land at several sites. You will see the South Shetlands and Cuverville Island, home to a large colony of chinstrap penguins. Among the places we will try to see and explore are Neko Harbour, beautifully located in the innermost part of Andvord Bay; Paradise Harbor, which got its descriptive name from the whalers during the last century; and Wilhelmina Bay, or 'Whale-mina Bay', as it is called, due to its spectacular scenery and humpback whales visiting in December. Weather, wind and ice conditions dictate our program and schedule. Safety is always the first priority and the captain will decide the final sailing schedule during the voyage. Join the expedition team and explore Antarctica on landings in great surroundings that take you close to thousands of penguins and seals, and enjoy kayaking and visits to the most interesting places. On board we offer several lectures and 'scientific experiments' for our young guests who participate in Hurtigruten's Young Explorers Program.
