Day 1

The Golden Circle

Arrive at Keflavik airport. Pick up the rental car at the Airport.
Drive to Þingvellir National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers numerous hiking trails; many are ideal for short and leisurely walks. Þingvellir is the cradle of the nation's history and independence. Þingvellir is also a site of exceptional geological interest and the ravine edge is the perfect spot for an overview of the tectonic forces that have shaped the landscape where the oldest parliament in the world was located. From there continue to Geysir and visit Geysisstofa. There is an interesting multimedia show, where you can experience earthquakes and learn about volcanoes and volcanic activity.   You also stop by the magnificent Gullfoss waterfalls.

Day 2

The Westman Islands

Drive from your hotel in the morning to the Landeyjahofn Harbor for a ferry (subject to weather conditions) over to the Westman Islands.  The Westman Islands are a group of 15-18 islands,  located off the mainland’s south coast. The islands were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions along a 30-km long fissure lying southwest to northeast. The largest island is Heimaey, 13.4 km2. Most of the islands have steep sea cliffs, and are well vegetated. Bird hunting and egg collecting are traditional to the islanders’ culture.  You stay one or two nights on Heimaey, and explore the island, which was struck by an erution in 1973, where all the inhabitants of the town had to evacuate to the mainland.  There are boat tours from the island for whale watching and sea angling, and you can watch the Sea Bird Colonies, with Puffins, Guillemots, Cormorants, Kittiwakes, and many more (summer season).
Option is to spend one or two nights on the island, but a day tour is a good option.

Day 3

The South Coast, Volcanoes and Black Beaches

Take the ferry back to the mainland. Drive through a landscape formed by glaciers and the many eruptions of the nearby volcanoes. You might visit the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Centre where you will learn how it was for the habitants in the area when the Volcano was erupting in 2010.  There are many hiking opportunities in the area.   Drive along the south coast and walk behind the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. The folk museum at Skógar and the nearby waterfall Skógafoss make a fascinating stop.
Visit the puffins (summer) at Cape Dyrhólaey and stroll along the endless black sand beaches in Reynishverfi.
Drive to the picturesque village of Vík, and visit Seljavellir to enjoy one of the most remote outdoor swimming pools in Iceland, surrounded by high cliffs and the glacier Mýrdalsjökull.
Accommodation in the Area

Day 4 and 5

Skaftafell National Park and The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Visit the amazing Skaftafell National Park nestled between glaciers offering many hiking possibilities. Continue to the shimmering icebergs of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You can take an optional boat tour (summer) on the lake.  Seals are often spotted around the lake, and going to the beach to watch the icebergs being thrown around by the waves is mesmerizing.
Stay one or two nights in the area.

Day 6

Coastal Villlages to Reykjavík

Drive back west along the South Coast, and stop by the charming fishing village of Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki, and from there to Nesjavellir, where an immensely powerful geothermal station is operated and it is fantastic to see the strokes from hot water coming from the ground high in the air.  Drive to the Capital, Reykjavík, where you stay the last night.  Reykjavik is an exciting modern city with lots to see and do or if you want to relax visit one of the many spas and swimming pools. Take a swim in one of the great outdoor swimming pools.

Day 7

If you leave in the afternoon you can spend the morning in Reykjavik or leave early and stop by the Blue lagoon on your way to the airport.

REYKJAVÍK is the northern most capital city in the world. Lined with colorful, corrugated steel buildings, the streets in the downtown area are very pedestrian-friendly and full of fascinating museums, quaint shops, and cozy cafes.  Spend the morning exploring the city at your leisure and then head back to Keflavík airport.

You can also stop by Bláa Lónið, the Blue Lagoon, for a refreshing swim before your flight.
